Case: Translation of curricula into English

Task

Translation of curricula from Danish into English

Client

The Royal Academy of Music (Aarhus/Aalborg)

Time

Spring to autumn 2011

Description

In 2011, the Royal Academy of Music (Aarhus/Aalborg, Denmark) began revising their curricula, all of which were subsequently to be translated into English. The assignment was an exciting challenge for me. With my knowledge of music and music terminology as well as my academic background, however, I had the necessary knowledge of the subject matter to understand the source text well enough to be able to render it in English.

The assignment posed quite a few interesting terminological challenges; the Danish folk high school system is unknown outside Denmark, and certain musical terms, especially within church music, are very hard to translate as the concepts or the phenomena they designate are not used in the English-speaking world. Consequently, I kept a regularly dialogue with the client during translation to ensure a good result and also scrutinised the websites of similar educational institutions and other music websites to find suitable English expressions.

The client says

Christina Lindhardt, Head of Student Administration, the Royal Academy of Music:
We are very satisfied with our cooperation. All assignments are carried out in a timely and competent manner."
